Sapphire Vs Daimond
The beauty of diamonds and sapphires is exemplary. They are the two most sought after gems which enjoy the pleasure of being the gems of the kings and queens. Both the stones have a long written history and the praises will continue till eternity.
These gems symbolize infinite bonding, lasting commitment, unending love and trust. They evoke faith, sincerity and feeling of devotion.
Diamond and sapphire are well known for their association with jewelry especially engagement rings. Jewelry, be it rings, earrings, pendants, necklaces or bracelets, studded with these stones is generally considered very pricey. Diamonds and sapphires rest in close proximity as the two stones are greatly used to complement each other.
Instead of so many affinities there are few specific differences that put these two valuable gems far away from each other.
Structural Difference
The first is the structural difference. Diamonds are pure tetrahedral carbon crystals which in rough form are found in cubes, rhombic dodecahedra and macles shapes. Their compact and strong crystal structure makes them the hardest gemstone with 10 on moh’s scale of hardness. Unlike diamonds, sapphires are hexagonal aluminum oxide crystals which in rough states found in barrel shapes, double pointed hexagonal pyramids and tabloid shapes. Sapphires score 9 on moh’s scale and so are the second hardest stones.
Diamonds are formed under extremely high pressure and temperature at a great depth under the earth crust and are found in kimberlite pipes and alluvial deposits. Sapphires in contrast are found in metamorphic and igneous rocks and formed due to the constant shift in heat and pressure.

Diamonds are generally colorless crystals. It is only one in millions chances when an atom like nitrogen or boron or any other replaces a single atom of carbon resulting in formation of colored diamond. This is not the case with sapphires which are generally colored and come in an array of hues. Though the color in sapphires is also because of impurities but is a common phenomenon as the crystal structure allows this. Blue is the most common color in sapphires followed by yellow, pink, orange, green and white.
Fancy colored diamonds though comes in more than 300 natural hues yet they make only 1% of the total diamond deposits.
Like the color cut is also a very important differentiating factor. Diamonds are cut in facets to enhance their brilliance and fire. The light reflection proportion plays a major role in diamond cut. The cut also defines the clarity and transparency. In sapphires the cut helps in proportionate display of color. It can be a facet cut or a non facet cut depending on the quality of stone. Few inclusions with fair brilliance are acceptable when the color intensity is ideal.
Diamond clarity is grades on the scale of D to Z and sapphire clarity is determined on the basis of light to intense and deep dark color with variations in hues, saturation and tones.
