Recently held huge mining industry convention during the first week of March in Toronto, a consultant with Israel's Tacy Ltd had said that with these used gems coming back in the market will mean that prices could stagnate over the long term despite the supply restraints.

According to the analysts, industry was already expecting a dip in prices for a short duration following the weak global economy that has cut disposable income in Europe and North America. But according to the forecast by a respected expert Even-Zohar, the recycling could hurt explorers and miners for years.

To support his prediction Even-Zohar quoted a few numbers. He said that the rough diamond market was worth about $15.2 billion in 2011. At the same time, Also Even-Zohar expects that recycled diamonds worth $1 billion will also be back into the market this year.

Some local jewelers and pawn shop owners have also confirmed this and stated that they cannot tell if there are more divorces, or more people are handing over their inheritances but there has been a significant rise in the number of diamonds they bought in the year 2011.

There are also some organizations that offer Cash-for-gold that usually buy the rings. Then they remove the diamonds, melt down the gold and sell the materials to wholesalers. They ship the diamonds to cutting houses for polishing and recutting, and the gems go back on the market.

All this is happening at a time when mining for good quality diamonds and gemstone is getting increasingly difficult.
